Timeline of Events – Current Round of Negotiations between UPS and the IPA

August 2004 - March 2005
The IPA, UPS and the NMB met one week a month from August 2004 thru March 2005 in Cincinnati. Going into this round of mediated negotiations, UPS and the IPA had five open issues; Scope, Scheduling, Retirement, Benefits and Compensation. After meeting in Cincinnati, not one of the five issues was closed out. Scheduling was the only area that saw significant progress.

June 21, 2004
UPS and the IPA jointly announce the decision to request mediation from the National Mediation Board. This announcement also points out that no agreements have yet been reached on five key areas of the contract.

March 11, 2004
The IPA and UPS mutually agree to extend Interest Based Bargaining through July 1, 2004.

January 19, 2004
Negotiations resume with a new IPA team at the table.

December 31, 2003
The pilot labor contract between UPS and the IPA becomes amendable. 

December 5, 2003
The IPA elects 747 Captain Tom Nicholson as the Association’s 2nd president. He succeeds founding President 757/767 Captain Bob Miller.

October 21, 2003  
Negotiations are put on hold for IPA Executive Board Elections.

October 2002   
The IPA and UPS enter direct negotiations utilizing the principals of Interest Based Bargaining, which is facilitated by the National Mediation Board.
